10/06/11 Autumnal Mornings! -Record High Temps by Sunday!

Did you feel it, yes, that is some good autumn crispness in the air. Maybe some of you saw some frost or a freeze, well the threat is even high come overnight into Friday morning as a cool Canadian high sets in. It beats rain tho!

Thursday Morning Lows. Areas away from the coast and the Cape will see temperatures drop to or below Freezing. Urban areas will not see a frost overnight.

This COOL high will warm up significantly over the weekend and allow temperatures to climb back into the 80s by Sunday. Interestingly enough areas in New England will be warmer than those in the Carolina's or even northern Florida!

A cool start with record high temperatures likely on Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 80s with low humidity!

10/04/11 After 13 days, a shift to the better...

On Sept 21, I wrote about a stalled out weather pattern that would set up over the east coast, now 13 days later, this extremely stubborn low that came with reinforcements will move on out of the picture later today.

A band of heavy rain set up over the Northshore this morning, producing flooding and up to 4" of rain. You can click the image below to see it add up.

Today's weather will be influenced by the low that is tracking off to the east this morning with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible throughout the day.

The pattern will change from the low over the northeast as seen on this map below.

The low is cut off from the main flow of the jet stream allowing for the same weather to repeat over and over again.

However, by Wednesday and into the weekend, a ridge of high pressure will replace this low and allow for a clear sky and comfortable temperatures, very seasonable for early October.

A cold air mass will be in place and with clear skies and calm conditions, a widespread frost and a freeze is likely outside of 128/95 Thursday night as temperatures will fall in the lower 30s and upper 20s in many locations.

10/2/11 It's Colder in Florida than in Boston!

Believe it folks, a punch of cool autumn air had swept all the way to Florida this morning!

Cold air has pushed into northern Florida this morning with temperatures in the upper 40s, while Boston is in the lower 60s.  Even places in Alabama and the high mountains of North Carolina are in the 30's!

This cold pool of air will work its way into New England over the next 48 hours and will finally bring some drier conditions and cooler temperatures.

However, for now, low pressure over PA will keep us damp and rainy for the day with a few breaks from time to time. There will be some sun later today.

The moisture over PA will move in Monday and into Tuesday. The cooler air that is just to our east and south will not fully arrive until Tuesday.

Hurricane Ophelia is a strong Category 3 hurricane that will bring strong winds up to 73mph to Newfoundland on Monday.

October Weather in Boston - This could depress you.

Here is it, the first of October!

The month where a noticeable change happens with the weather from the beginning of the month to the end.

• The days get 1 hour 22 minutes shorter.  
• It will be dark at 6 PM. 
• The last 90 degree days have happened in October
• 80 degree days are common, but will be non-existent in November. 
• There is a chance of snow in the air this month with an average of 0.1" falling.
• However the record snowfall for Boston in October is only 1.1" back in 2005
• The first frost will likely occur across most of MA except for the immediate Boston metro area which will be after Nov 1.

9/29/11 It's Warmer and Sunny in Canada!

The stubborn low that has been over the Great Lakes, just does not want to move as previously forecast, but it is going to start finally today.

The kicker is going to "open" up the low up, only to have it close off again over New England come Saturday. Sound complicated right.  Well, all it means that in the atmosphere, when something closes off, it is harder to get it to move or allow anything into it to change it.  With the low to our west, a southerly flow will continue to allow moisture to stream northward (the whitest areas)

Thursdays weather set up

The low sticks around over New England until Monday when a cold airmass from Canada will help finally shove it off into Atlantic Canada. ( Tropical Storm Ophelia may strike Newfoundland by Monday)

What will be interesting with this situation, something that I alluded to in a post last week was that this low will bring in much cooler air behind it. Yes cold enough that snow could fall in the high elevations of the Appalachian mountains in VA or NC as temperatures fall to or below 32F.  For us here in New England, we will be warmer than many places in the south.

Sunday morning lows. One of those situations where it will be warmer in Canada than it will be in the south!

Your forecast for Thursday:

Heavy rain will remain in western MA and VT, clouds will be around for most of the day with scattered showers possible. Highs will be in the mid 70's.

Friday- Another break comes in and the sky will clear, highs in the mid 70s.

9/27/11 Thank Canada for the weather today.

The upper low over the Illinois will slowly begin to move eastward late tonight into Wednesday. This will increase our chances for showers beginning overnight tonight into Thursday.

High pressure to the north in Quebec will usher in a dry day today along with an east wind off the ocean which will keep coastal areas cooler.

The weather that is over NY to NC will be our weather Wednesday and Thursday. The cool air will begin to arrive on Friday with the punch of much cooler air coming in for Sunday.
